Fifth Grader Teaches Class for a Day

Posted: Updated:

St. Mary's fifth grade class is normally taught by Mr. Ulmen, but today was different. Mr. Ulmen was present but Mr. Archuleta was in charge. Students usually call Mr. Archuleta, Ben, since he's one of their classmates.

Ben's parents won him Teacher for a Day at the school's silent auction fundraiser. After learning he'd be teacher for a day, Ben says he was both excited and nervous.

"It just felt so amazing. Just like always wondering what I, what it's like to be an adult," says Ben.

He and Mr. Ulmen met the day before to go over the day's lesson plan on what Ben would need to teach. Mr. Ulmen told Ben, this was his class and what he says goes.

"I've given them tests. I've, I have done some, some warnings and punishments so far," says Ben.

"I've kind of was his shadow today. So, I was kind of whispering in his ear a little bit and guiding him throughout the day. I've been pretty close with him, and we've been kinda on the same page today. He's a pretty good cooperating teacher," say Ulmen.

Over all Ben's classmates agreed, apart from the obvious, it was a normal day.

"Right when we came in the classroom this morning he did the same thing Mr. Ulmen did every day. So, it was kinda quite similar. It was kinda weird. Like having him be our age and be our teacher," says Halle Arndt.

"It has been interesting. Also to be able to teach a child as a teacher. And it's been an interesting task, but it's been going wonderfully," says Ulmen.

Ben's biggest goal was to keep the students quiet. So, that's one perk he says he'll miss as a teacher. Another is his prime spot in the classroom.

"This is such an upgrade from those ones," says Ben.

Mr. Ulmen and the children say Ben did a good job. He kept everyone quiet and on task.  Now, they are looking forward to the next opportunity for teacher of the day.

Students at St. Mary's also have the opportunity to be principal for a day.
