Department of Commerce Awards Tribal Colleges Grants

Posted: Updated:

During the last legislative session lawmakers appropriated $5 million to the department of commerce to offer grants to various tribal colleges.

The grants help encourage workforce development. So far, more than $4 million was awarded to four of the five tribal colleges in the state. The latest grant to the Cankdeska Cikana Community College, on the Spirit Lake Reservation, was for nearly $500,000.

"They recognize that need for what we call quick to market training, we need people, we need people now. So, they're actually developing a one year certificate program. They are developing an associate in construction management. And most of the grants, that have been awarded,  involve some level of intensive assistance in job readiness, job search, getting that job and keeping that job as well," says director of Workforce Development, Beth Zander.

Other awards went to United Tribes Technical College, Sitting Bull College and Turtle Mountain Community College.
