Basin Electric Employees Retire Early

Posted: Updated:

The average age of a retiree is typically 65. But a company in Bismarck is seeing a trend among their employees to leave the work force a few years early.

Basin Electric is facing the most retirements in the co-op's history. This past year 179 workers retired from the energy company, most of them having 30 years of service under their belts.

The retirements don't come as a surprise as most of Basin's power plants began operating between 1954 and 1981, and the plants that came online in the 70's are seeing the most major turn over. HR representatives also say employees have seen financial advantage to enter early retirement. But the company says they have been planning for the turn over and are preparing for their new work force.

"Even though we did see an increased number of retirements in 2013 that wasn't a surprise for us, we've been watching those numbers. We do workforce numbers planning, succession planning at Basin electric and we are prepared for this drop off in the number of employees and we will be bringing in new folks. So this is not a surprise at all, but we will still see that trend continue," says Ellen Holt, Basin Electric.

Basin says they expect a high number of retirements for the next 3 to 5 years. The open job positions span the industry from engineering, to labor, to information technology.
