VoiceBook Project Brings Families Closer Together

Posted: Updated:

With the way people and families move around so much, it's not as common as it used to be for children to live in the same town as their grandparents. So, it's not as easy to maintain a steady relationship. Besides spending a lot of money on travel, there are some ways to keep a connection.

What child doesn't like to hear a story? And what grandparent doesn't want to read to a child? The VoiceBook Project started a few years ago, as a way to link generations together when distance might make it difficult.

"I think it's a neat idea for grandparents that probably will never see this grandchild. I'll see this one, but I've got some grandchildren a long time away that I haven't seen. So, this will be nice to be real close to her, or him, whichever. I hope it's a him," says Ella O'Shea, who is expecting a great-grandchild.

There's something to be said for hearing a familiar voice read a book. Participants make a recording  that will be put on a CD and given to a child. And, of course, the reader won't get tired of telling the story over and over.

Not only do they get a copy of the recording, they also get to keep the book, so the child can follow along.

"Knowing that, okay my Dad's off being deployed. I have his voice here. I can put it in the CD player whenever I want. I can hear his voice. So, I think it's really cool. Even being able to go back and hear your grandparent's voice when you're 40 years old and you don't have them around any more," Erin Pringle, VoiceBook Project.

Technology that can help shorten the distance and erase the years.

The VoiceBook Project holds recording sessions twice a year at retirement communities. For more information, or to donate books or CD players, call Pringle at 701-258-5436.
