Red Cross Launches New Pet First Aid App

A new app can put lifesaving information in the hands of pet owners. The Red Cross' Pet First Aid app provides step-by-step instructions, along with videos and images of several first aid and emergency situations.

The app also has a list of early warning signs, so pet owners know when to call the vet. It can even help users find pet-friendly hotels and animal hospitals.

"It provides information on up to 25 different emergencies that you might encounter with your dog. If it's a cardiac emergency, some kind of heat or cold emergency, breathing emergency, it just provides all kinds of information that you would have right at your fingertips," says Jessica Gibertson, Red Cross.

Gabrielle Petri has had Prince for a year. And aside from his regular checkups, he hasn't taken any trips to the vet. She says she's not sure how to react in the event of an emergency.

"I think it would be helpful. Although I'm a nurse, typically the population of patients that I'm working with are able to tell me what's wrong or tell me what hurts. So, this would be a great assessment tool should I ever need it," says pet owner, Gabrielle Petri.

 The app costs 99 cents. You can download it from the Apple and Google Play stores.
