ADHD Affects Eight to Ten Percent of Kids

Posted: Updated:
There are parts of the brain that have certain responsibilities.

"And the front part of the brain has the job of being the "business manager" or the boss. Sort of being the parent inside your head. And sometimes, it doesn't do its job very well," says Dr. Mark Doerner, Sanford.

And if the brain isn't doing that job, it may be because there is an imbalance of chemicals.
Doctors say one of the leading causes of ADHD is an imbalance norepinephrine and dopamine, two chemicals that help the body to maintain alertness, increase focus, effort and motivation. And when it comes to the issue of over-diagnosing, docs aren't too worried.

"Each and every child that we treat in our practice has to be seen periodically at five or six month intervals," says Parag Kumar, Sanford. "We give them prescriptions at one month at a time and we do use an evaluation scale, which is 105 questions filled out by the teachers, parents and other care givers once on a yearly basis."

But doctors do say one of the major problems when it comes to diagnosing kids doesn't have anything to do with kids at all. It's the parents trying to solve the problem first by jumping online and self-diagnosing.

"They use all the diagnostic criteria that I talked to you about," says Kumar. "They are kind of prejudice so they tend to read between the lines and then tend to see the behaviors that are not actually there or they tend to imagine them."

So, instead of hopping online, make an appointment with a pediatrician. They can help diagnose and decide if treatment is the right way to move forward. And they're a lot more knowledgeable than Dr. Web MD.
