Polar Plunge Supports Special Olympics

Posted: Updated:
John Lindsey was one of 26 people brave enough to go for a swim on a brisk January morning. The Magic City community came together for their 2nd annual Polar Plunge.  And for Lindsey, it was a special day.

"My Uncle, come to find out, was in the Special Olympics when he was younger," says plunger, John Lindsey. "So, I felt like it was a great opportunity, I've always wanted to do a Polar Plunge."

Sponsored by the Law Enforcement Torch Run, the Polar Plunge is an event to help raise money to support Special Olympics North Dakota.

"It's community members, volunteers, supporters of Special Olympics that want to see the programs grow," says Development Director, Reid Huttenen.

North Dakota Special Olympics offers 15 sports year round for children and adults with intellectual disabilities.  There are 1,400 special needs athletes in North Dakota, and events like the Polar Plunge keep those programs running.

"It's the true meaning of fun and sportsmanship," says Huttenen. "Everybody really enjoys themselves after the games are over.  Win or loose they're still hugging the people they competed against.  Having a great time, high-fiving friends, competing.  I don't think there's enough good things you can say about the sports we offer through Special Olympics."

Over $3,000 were raise through the 2014 Polar Plunge.  That's close to a $1,000 more then their last event.  And as a state, Special Olympics ND hopes to raise over $70,000 for their programs.

"It's being able to pull the community together for something that is special, and be able to raise money so that some of our members of our community can have programs that really do help them," says MAFB Chief of Security Forces Training, Dan Bower.

Minot's Polar Plunge event was the first of 6 scheduled to happen throughout the state.
