Falling Billboard Causes Car and Building Damage

Posted: Updated:

Winds gusting up to 70 miles per hour have been causing problems in the area.  People at the Ranger Lounge in Minot got a big surprise late last night.

"This post would have started right here and went up," says Richard Napora, Ranger Lounge Owner.  "You can see where we put the cut outs.  We just put this overhang in.  And, this post would have actually been right inside the little cut out and the other post that's lying down.  This way would have been right where that damaged occurred."

This was the scene this morning after a 50 foot tall billboard fell on top of two vehicles in the Ranger Lounge parking lot.

"I was serving drinks and heard what sounded like a freight train come through and a bunch of patrons went out to see what was going on. They came in and told me my car was smashed," says Melissa Mora, Ranger Lounge Bartender.

Just after midnight, Ranger Lounge Owner Richard Napora received a call at home.

"One of my first questions was did it hit the building?  I was happy that it was the vehicles that were hit, no serious damage and nobody was in the way of it," says Napora.

For Mora, it was only her second night on the job. And, when she received the news, she couldn't believe what had just happened.

"I'm pretty much in shock," says Mora.

With the high wind speeds and the no travel advisory issued for the area, it may take the Ranger Lounge a few days to clean up, so they're asking all customers to use the back entrance.

After renting a car and dealing with insurance, Mora is ready for another night on the job, but not until she takes a look at her car first.

KMOT did speak to Newman Outdoor Advertising today. At this time, they do not know the cause of the incident.  They will be surveying the damage to find out what exactly happened.  But, they do believe the high winds did play a factor in the incident.
