Strong Winds Displace Mandan Residents

Posted: Updated:

Strong winds caused damage across the state today. In Mandan, some residents won't be able to go home tonight.

Anyone who went outside today could feel how strong the wind was. In Mandan, the winds managed to pick up something a little heavier too.

An apartment roof ripped off its base hanging dangerously close to other units and blowing in the strong winds.

It looks bad, but residents say it sounded even worse.

"It sounded like a tornado. My kids started screaming, we got up, we all ran to the living room because you could hear it was something happening in the back. When I went in the back, I honestly though a plane crashed," says Shannon Greig, Mandan.

That was the scene around 7:30 a.m. at the apartment complex on North Bay Drive.

"I came back around my side of the building and I noticed that the roof has been flying up in the air, and so I took a quick picture of it and I sent it over to my landlord saying hey, you better check your roof," Leyla Dwelle, Mandan.

"When we looked outside, realized one of our windows had broke in the bedroom so we had part of the roof basically hanging into our house kind of thing," says Greig.

By 8 in the morning, Mandan firefighters put notices on every door, telling people they had to get out.

"The notice we got today said today and tonight but that's it so far. I'm guessing there's no way, I don't think we'll be back tomorrow," says Greig.

"The only thing separating the occupants from the outdoors is the roof sheet rock, because the entire roof, for most of the building, is completely torn off," says Morton County Emergency Manager, Tom Doering.

For residents who have no place to go, the Red Cross is setting up shop at the First Lutheran Church in Mandan.

"When it's a larger scale incidence like this, then usually what we do is go with a shelter. It's a more efficient way of doing it," says Red Cross director, Jessica Gilbertson.

The property owner already has crews cleaning up debris and repairing the roof.

The Morton County Emergency Manager says two families have contacted the Red Cross so far. One will be staying in a hotel, and the other is still trying to figure out where to stay.

Crews are not sure how long it will take to fix the damage.
