How to Avoid Being Scammed

Posted: Updated:

Scammers are always coming up with new tricks to steal your money. And, they're becoming more and more creative on how they're dipping into your pocket.

"They try to get the too good to be true thing out there. And, I can't say that there's one security thing or other another that they're looking to bypass, but they're really looking for an opportunity to prey on the most willing are," says Captain John Klug, Minot Police Department.

Whether its phone, online or lottery scams, there are all types of schemes in which people are trying to defraud others.

Scammers target the elderly, people who are in distress and those who are gullible.

"If something doesn't seem right, it probably isn't," says Klug.

The latest scam trying to rip you off is called Ransomware. And, it's going on right here in Minot.

This is when you open a bad link or attachment in an email. By doing so, your computer becomes encrypted. And, scammers will demand money to unlock your computer.

"We've gotten a number of calls. I think there is sort of a rash of this going around right now. I wouldn't necessarily say that it's epidemic proportions, but there is certainly an up tick from what we've had over the last several months," says Mark Jantzer, Computer Store General Manager.

The best way to protect yourself is to never click or open any unfamiliar sites or emails.

There are several other scams to be on the look out for. For a complete list, you can log onto the Better Business Bureau's website at http:minnesota.bbb.org
