Employers Encounter Resume Fraud

Posted: Updated:

With so many available jobs all across the state, people are moving from all over the country to find work.  Now, employers are tasked with looking through piles of resumes. But, how accurate is the information on each resume?

They come in all designs and styles. Resumes are supposed to be a tool for job seekers to showcase their skills and experience on paper.  But, for many college students, that's sometimes easier said than done.

Minot State University Career Services Director Lynda Bertsch says, "A lot of times, they don't know where to start.  They come in with a blank sheet of paper.  What goes there?  What shouldn't go there?"

But, according to an article on Earsucker.com, 80 percent of all job seekers submit resumes that contain misleading information and job qualifications.

"I would love to tell you I am an expert in everything, but I am not,"says Bertsch.

Job seekers without a proper degree or skills may feel they don't stand a chance against other applicants. So, they lie on their resume out of desperation.

"I tell them you obviously want to use words or jargon that matches," says Bertsch. "Hopefully, the industry you're hoping to get into however, you know, kind of sell yourself, but be honest."

When you go to print off your resume, you'll want to make sure you're 100 percent accurate because if not, it could cost you your job down the road.

"I think nothing is worse than a student that really can't deliver if they get hired. They can't deliver what they said they could because that doesn't go over well for the employer and it definitely doesn't go over well for the candidate.  And, if they do end up staying at that employment, it does make for a rocky relationship, I think," says Bertsch.

While Bertsch encourages students to put part-time jobs, internships and special projects on their resume, she believes the most crucial area is skills.
