Safety Board Releases Report on Train Derailment

Posted: Updated:

The National Transportation Safety Board released its preliminary report into what happened at the train derailment, collision and subsequent explosions near Casselton on December 30.

While we already knew that a grain car derailed and blocked the path of an oncoming oil train, we've now learned that both trains were traveling well under the 60 mile per hour speed limit. And of the 20 oil tanker cars that derailed in the collision, 18 of them were punctured. This led to the release of more than 400,000 gallons of crude oil.

State and federal leaders are already calling for improvements in the making of rail cars, so they don't puncture so easily.
