Lignite Industry Sees Production Increase in 2013

Posted: Updated:

The numbers are in and North Dakota's lignite industry had a slight increase in production in 2013.

This past year, the state's four largest mines produced more than 27 million tons of coal, but according to the Lignite Council President, that number is slightly below the state's long term average.

"If you're looking for a magic number it's been around 30 million for a long time. It's going to continue to be at that number with maybe some modest increases in the future. But we're pretty happy with where it is," says Lignite Energy Council President, Jason Bohrer.

Most of the lignite coal that was mined was used to create electricity, while smaller amounts were used to make synthetic natural gas and other bi products.
