Cold Weather Brings Slips and Falls

Posted: Updated:

Icy and slushy conditions have turned parking lots and sidewalks into ice skating rinks. Because of that, Trinity Hospital in Minot has seen more and more patients coming in with bone fractures. Although you can't change the weather, Dr. Earl Scott says there are ways to at least combat the slippery conditions. He says if you can, travel in pairs for extra support, or you can always opt for extra traction on your shoes.

"Once you fall, that's a major event. And, it could be a major life changing event for some people. As I mentioned in elderly, we see spine fractures and hip fractures, which can be quite devastating. And, take a long time to heal and may never be able to get back to the level, function and ability that was there before the slip and fall," says Scott.

It can take anywhere from six to eight weeks for an average fracture to heal. Sometimes, up to a year for serious cases.
