Health Department Reports Influenza Activity

Posted: Updated:

The North Dakota Department of Health reports widespread influenza activity for the first time this season.

Ward County is among five counties with over fifty cases of influenza. The H1N1 strand, which has proven to be the most predominant strain this season, has affected more children and young to middle-aged adults than is typical.

But, there is some positive news. It's not too late to get vaccinated, and there is good reason to do so.

"Especially for the H1N1 strand, it's been noted that for some reason, younger people or pregnant women, and people who are overweight are more likely to have severe illness. They're not more likely to get the influenza, but they are more likely to have severe illness if they have the H1N1 strand," says Dr. Casmiar Nwaigwe.

Doctors recommend taking everyday precautions like washing your hands with an alcohol based sanitizer and covering your cough or sneeze. Sanitation stations containing tissues, masks, and soap have been set up to encourage these habits.
