Some things we just take for granted: clean water, supermarkets that never run out of food, and mail delivery. However, in the midst of a population boom, the reality can fall short of our expectations.
While getting your mail on time doesn't seem like the biggest issue in North Dakota, those in the western half of the state say the reliability of the postal service is a major concern.
"If you listen to the stories, you realize that the one thing that has always been stable in rural America, we've always been proud of the rural delivery," says Senator Heidi Heitkamp. "We're losing that, and it's not just in the oil patch, it's all across rural America."
Senator Heitkamp visited with community leaders, postal workers and customers in Dickinson Friday to talk about some of the issues with the postal service. Some brought up the fact that when a postal worker has the day off, there's no one to take his or her place. Thus, residents just don't get their mail.
"It is a critical part of our infrastructure, and these are things that I need to know in order to best represent North Dakota on postal issues," Heitkamp explains.
Postal workers talked about the problem of retaining employees because of long hours, pay cuts, and no benefits. The regional manager was on hand, however, to hear those concerns and try to make some changes.
"I'm glad that we are in a forum where people who are in a position to fix those problems are listening," Heitkamp says.
Heitkamp now has a new website where North Dakotans can share their experiences with the post office. She says she will bring those concerns to the US Postal Service and the Government Accountability Office to compare with their information.
