Influenza Cases on the Rise

Posted: Updated:

The State Health Department says in the last few weeks, numbers have increased nearly tenfold.

More than 840 cases have been reported since September, and there had only been 88 cases until the middle of December. The strain causing most of the cases is Influenza A H1N1. But even with the jump, the Health Department isn't overly concerned.

"Influenza seasons are highly variable so it's hard to say if this is going to be a big season or not yet so it's high, but not unreasonably high. It's not strange for this time of year," says Influenza Surveillance Coordinator, Jill Baber.

Baber says the best way to prevent the flu is to get a flu shot, and also make sure to wash your hands, cover your mouth when you cough and stay home if you feel sick.
