NDSU Extension Service Turns 100

Posted: Updated:

The North Dakota State University Extension Service is getting old. This year the service turns 100.

This year marks the centennial for extension services across the country. The Smith-Lever Act of 1914 created the services which brings agricultural information from universities to rural areas.

One of the biggest parts of the NDSU Extension Service is the 4-H program. And agents say they've seen the clubs change over the years.

"Agriculture is obviously our foundation and our background. However, there are more youth concentrations in urban areas. So 4-H has changed its programs and its educational pieces for youth based on what youth are doing," says Burleigh County Extension Agent, Cathy Palczewski.

Agents say many clubs now focus more on technology like robotics, instead of agriculture.
