Students Watch Open Heart Surgery

Posted: Updated:

Most high school students who think they want a medical career don't get a chance to take part in a hands-on experience. Dickinson area students had a special opportunity today to almost get inside the operating room.

New technology and video conference calls can help connect people from around the world. And today that technology brought students from Dickinson to a live open heart surgery in Chicago.

Dickinson High School students have seen plenty of pictures of the human heart.

"It's cool because you don't get the opportunity to watch someone's surgery hands-on," says Senior Ashley Wanner.

The Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago chose DHS to watch a live open heart surgery via I-TV.

"You can't really be in the hospital watching it, so being able to watch it on the screen is probably the best way to do it," says Wanner.

It was just one of three schools selected from across the country.

"It's a very difficult thing to get. So, whenever we can share something like this, I'm really thankful that Dickinson High School has opted to host something like this,"says DHS Health Careers teacher, Misty Dschaak.

The school has applied for the past two years, but was always on the waiting list.

"It's incredible, even the students from last year were very disappointed that they weren't able to. I was asked on a weekly basis, 'Are we getting closer to the top? Are we going to get to watch it?' So, I've actually had students come back from last year, and they're in here watching it today," says Dschaak.

And DHS invited other schools to join in, too.

"I have DSU nursing students that are in here, I have students from the rural surrounding areas because it's so important that they get to see these things and to get them excited to go into our healthcare field," she says.

"It's kind of like a community thing. We have everybody from different places coming together just to get this experience. It's really cool," says Sophomore Kira Zastoupil.

Students also got the chance to talk to the surgeon and nurses during the operation.

A Wisconsin high school also watched through I-TV, and a Chicago school was actually at the hospital.
