Gardening Can Brighten Up the Winter Blues

Posted: Updated:

Colder, darker weather can sometimes give people the winter blues. But, inside Lowe's Floral in its springtime.

Flowers may brighten up your place but, also your mood.

For those who may be suffering from the winter blues, you may be surprised what a greenhouse can do for your overall health.

"There is no doubt that plants will make people feel better about a long, cold winter," says Phil Lowe, owner of Lowe's Floral.

Not only is the greenhouse a comfortable 62 degrees right now, but just walking among the plants and shrubs can give you an overall boost. That's because you're surrounding yourself with something that's alive and growing, which you may not see during this time of the year.

"We have people come and walk through because they have the winter blahs. They're sick of the cold. They're sick of the snow everywhere. So, they come in and see something green," says Lowe.

Filling up your home with plants, even a small mint plant can do wonders to add colors to your home as well as brightening up your mood.

"I think even more than that, its aesthetics. And, knowing that there's something green, alive and growing, because when you look outside, even though there are a lot of live plants under all that snow, it's really hard to think far enough ahead to say, 'I know spring is going to come.' Right now, it's easy to say, 'I hate this cold, I want to go anywhere warm," says Lowe.

Lowe's Floral is already planting and prepping their spring seeds. So, spring is just around the corner.

In order to keep plants warm inside the greenhouse all winter long, employees use coal and natural gas to heat things up. They have one as a back up system just incase one system goes down.
