Cold Weather Creates a Hobby and Charity Opportunity

Posted: Updated:

Temperatures today are warmer than they were yesterday. Winter however, is far from over, and students returning to class will still have to bundle up for recess. One woman made it her mission to make sure the state's kids are protected from Jack Frost when they head outside to the playground.

Cold weather doesn't freeze up Avis Dissell's fingers. She says she stays busy by knitting winter caps for complete strangers every day of the year.

"If I knit steady I can make one in about three hours, but I've made three or four in a day," she says.

Dissell knitted over 3,000 hats.  She gives all them away to children and adults to warm their heads and hearts.

"I feel I'm doing something worthwhile."

Her mother taught her to knit when she was five years old, and at 84, her hands haven't slowed down a stitch.

"It keeps my hands limber, keeps my mind active.'

She donates her hats to homeless shelters, abused adult centers and lots of schools. She says knitting is therapeutic.

"My doctor asked me if I need an antidepressant, and I said no. I just knit another cap."

All 130 students at Center-Stanton school received a hat from Dissell. Principal Kathy Bullinger was delighted to get the hat donation. She says it's not unusual for students to forget some of their winter clothing at home, or misplace caps and gloves before it's time for recess.

"We need these caps because it's cold outside."

Samantha Peterson is one student who says she intends to make sure the hat she got from Dissell doesn't get lost.

"It will be a special hat."

Several months of winter remain, but thanks to Dissell, cold weather won't give kids a chill.
