Winter Weather Causes Pet Owners to Take Caution

Posted: Updated:

As humans wear hats, gloves, boots and masks to battle frostbite in the brutal temperatures, but pet owners cannot forget their furry friends. While most animals have a built in coat, in temperatures like these, that probably won't be enough.

If your pet is used to these winter temperatures, they tend to have an advantage over pets who are new to the area.

"With the cold temperatures and wind, frostbite is definitely a concern. We worry more about the dogs and cats that aren't used to being outside in the cold," says Shayla Sorenson, Western Veterinary Clinic.

While you have to let your pet out to use the bathroom, be sure to pay attention to their paws for clues.

"I advise owners to monitor their feet, especially if they're outside. If they notice any excessive licking of the paws or if their toes become pink, they definitely need to be aware of those things. Also, with the wind chill be sure they have plenty of water," says Sorenson.

The temperatures are not your pets only winter enemy.

"Be careful of that ice melt that goes on the sidewalk. Sometimes, in some cases, it can be toxic. Not only to the skin, but also if they lick it off their paws. So, I recommend wiping off their paws after they've been outside," says Sorenson.

Believe it or not, those cute doggie sweaters are a big help against winter elements.

"When they're going outside, sweaters definitely help as long as they're dry. So, if they're out rolling in the snow and it gets all wet, just make sure they have a dry sweater on when they go out again," says Sorenson.

Dr. Sorenson especially recommends booties to help protect sensitive paws.
