You can also find plenty of history at the North Dakota Cowboy Hall of Fame. But some of the displays could use an upgrade.

The North Dakota Cowboy Hall of Fame looks empty during this off season, a winter day, but two rodeo legends are inside, sharing their stories.

"I'm honored to be asked to be able to do this sort of thing, and anything that will help get the public more knowledge on rodeo," says rodeo legend, Brad Gjermundson.

"The Hall of Fame I think is a real neat deal. They've got to have some interesting things going to keep people coming," says rodeo legend, Alvin Nelson.

It's all part of the plan for new Executive Director Kevin Holten. He's interviewing Gjermundson and Nelson to make sure North Dakotans don't forget some of the state's rich culture.

"The biggest asset in the state of North Dakota is its cowboy history and Native American history. It's important for anybody to know their history, and it just so happens that up to this point, nobody has ever brought it out like it should be brought out," says Holten.

Holten says the Hall of Fame will be making a lot of positive changes in 2014.

"One of the things that's going to change at the Hall of Fame is that we are going to update the displays more frequently," says Holten.

He says they'll be reaching a bigger audience when their Cowboy Chronicle newsletter turns monthly.

"We're going to distribute to 50,000 people instead of 3,000 people," says Holten.

And getting some old stories from rodeo royalty is the first step to getting more Hall of Fame visitors.

"It feels good to be able to represent North Dakota in that kind of fashion and be an asset to the whole state," says Gjermundson.

The Hall of Fame is open now by appointment only, but will be holding events throughout the off season. In Medora.

The Cowboy Hall of Fame is hosting its 18th annual celebration and expo in Mandan next month.
