Property Owners Required to Provide Fire Hydrant Clearance

Posted: Updated:

Minot is home to more than 2,000 fire hydrants, but during the winter months, snowy and icy conditions make it difficult to access them.

Under the city ordinance, property owners are required to maintain clearance around fire hydrants, including a pathway around them.

The clearance must be three foot in radius and six foot in diameter, so firefighters can effectively lay out hoses and other equipment.

"If we can't find the fire hydrant, we'll just go to the closest one we can find. And usually that requires another fire engine being called to the scene for additional hoses and stuff," says Brian Andersen, Fire Inspector.

If you have a hydrant on or near your property, you are encouraged to attach an antenna on top of the hydrant to make it easier for firefighters to spot from their trucks.

If you do not have an antenna, call the City of Minot Water Department at 857-4150.
