Oil Company Ordered to Stop Dumping Near Ross

Posted: Updated:

Oil waste and drinking water just don't mix, and now an oil company has been ordered to stop dumping waste in Ross.

A super drilling pit was located in the town's wellness protection zone and over the town's water supply. The pit which was operated by Oasis, could bury thousands of tons of cuttings from wells on the unit.

"There is an issue with all these cuttings coming out of the wells. We've got to find some solution for it. But just putting it in a pit with a plastic liner and covering it is not the answer. And there's no monitoring of it," says Ross Farmer Scott Meiers.

Spokesman for the Gas and Oil Division says that thanks to new technology inspectors can prevent this situation in the future.

"Previously our field inspectors didn't have the ability to look at wellhead protection areas on our GIS map layers. They do now so going forward we don't see this as an issue going forward and this of course is a very rare and unique situation," says Alison Ritter, NDIC.

The Industrial Commission has turned the permit authority over to Department of Mineral Resources director Lynn Helms.
