Safety Alert Issued on Crude Oil

Posted: Updated:

A  federal agency issues a safety alert on Bakken crude oil. The Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration warns that the light, sweet crude could be more flammable than traditional heavy crude oil.

The warning stems from preliminary inspections conducted after the recent derailment and fire in Casselton as well as derailments in Alabama and Quebec. But state regulators say the impact of the crash and the safety warning on production could take months to discover.

"At this time we don't for see too much impact on production. We would anticipate that companies would use a different means of transportation as far as the rail system, on they're going to have to avoid the Casselton area but we really won't be able to see any impact if at all until those February and subsequent march numbers come out," Alison Ritter, NDIC Oil and Gas.

Our energy reporter Mary Cate Mannion has more tonight.
