Dickinson Population Growth Increases Chances for Fire

Posted: Updated:

More people moving to Dickinson over the past few years has meant more work for the fire department. And the fire chief doesn't think that will change in 2014.

Calls to the fire department have just about doubled since four years ago.

"2009 we ended the year with 218 calls for service. As of just the other day, we were at 419 calls for service with a whole month of incidents that have not been entered," says Fire Chief Robert Sivak.

The extra work has put a strain on the mostly volunteer fire department. So, they'll be hiring three full-time firefighters in 2014. All of those hires were volunteers for the Dickinson fire department.

"2014 is going to be a very busy year for the city. Additional growth, additional construction, and more people moving in. So we don't see that as a trend that's going to slow down for us anytime soon, says Sivak.

Sivak says there's one construction project he's looking forward to this year, that's the new Dickinson Public Safety Center.

The planned Dickinson Public Safety Center will house both the Fire and Police Departments.
