Senior Organization Ends

Posted: Updated:

After 32 years of educating seniors about the legislative process, the Silver Haired Education Association (SHEA) terminated it's program.

"As time has passed, the number of seniors who are able to, or are interested in, serving as Assembly delegates has declined considerably," says committee chairman Marlow Nelson. "In the early years of the Assembly, there were two delegates from each North Dakota county."

At the 2012 Assembly, fewer than half of North Dakotas counties were represented.  Of the 31 counties that had elected delegates, only 23 attended.

"Its lost its effectiveness because of the lack of grassroots support from local senior clubs and county senior organizations," says Nelson.

SHEA helped pass many bills during the 2013 legislative session that focused on basic care and housing assistance.
