Weight Loss Products Could Cause Harm

Posted: Updated:

It's the number one New Year's resolution for Americans, losing weight. Here are some ways to do that, without getting caught up in fad diets and potentially harmful weight loss pills.

There's no such thing as a magic pill.

Fitness experts say diet pills are fine if you're adding them to your workout routine, but they can become an issue if they're your only form of weight loss. And remember, diet pills are only a supplement, and none of them are regulated by the FDA.

"You don't always know what's in them. And if you do, it's something like caffeine that will help you lose water weight, not necessarily fat," says Sanford dietitian Nicole Enzminger.

So, instead of a quick fix that only lasts as long as a pill does, head to the gym.

"There are all types of people that come to the gym. You know, there are some of us, like myself, who try to re-live the glory days and try to get back in our old playing shape. But, most people try and do it just to stay healthy and stay fit for the new year," says gym member Dante Tamassoni.

"You have to establish the working out and nutrition first. That's why it's always good to get started first with coming and getting off to a good weight training program, a good cardiovascular program, a great nutrition program," says David Widdison, Gold's Gym.

"About ten percent weight loss in six months is considered to be pretty reasonable, and if you lose more. It's possible, but ten percent weight loss in about six months is really very realistic," says Enzminger.

And remember, in order for exercise to work, you have to pair it with a healthy diet. Half of your plate filled with fruits and veggies. The other half filled with lean meats and starches.
Eating healthy doesn't have to be boring either.

"Look for recipes that are appealing to you. Recipes that food you can find in the grocery store. Try it in different ways and if it tastes terrible have a sense of humor about it and live and learn," says Enzminger.

It's the start of a new year and possibly a new you. So, get out there.

Some of the other common New Year's resolutions are: budgeting finances better and finding a job that's more rewarding.
