First District Health Offers Smoking Cessation Course

Posted: Updated:

If you're like millions of people, many set a New Year's resolution. And, for some they've made quitting smoking their top priority.

If you've decided that this is the year to quit, First District Health Unit is helping you reach that goal.

"I have people that just come in off the streets and they say, ' I want to quit. I have to quit,'" says Bonnie Riely, First District Health Unit Tobacco Cessation Coordinator.

On January 2, they'll be offering a two-hour crash course designed for people who want to not only quit smoking, but also chewing tobacco.

"One of the hardest things people are going to do is quit smoking. It's usually the first addiction we grab, and it's the last one we let go of," says Riely.

It's not the nicotine that kills you. It's what's in the cigarettes. Rat poison, hair dye and butane. The nicotine is what makes you keep buying more packs of cigarettes.

And, for Riely she personally knows what it's like to quit. Riely started smoking when she was just 13-years-old. After smoking for 32 years she decided enough was enough.

"When you smoke and you're getting sick from all of the health effects, and all of these dangers of smoking and chewing, it's not just you. It's your family that suffers so that was a big one for me," says Riely.

Riely recommends make a plan and stick to it. Create a support team of close friends and family. And, finally change your lifestyle. Instead of grabbing a cigarette, grab a nicotine patch.

"Use these things for as long as they need to. I mean if you need to use these items for a year, you'll still be considered a success story," says Riely.

For more information on how you can attend this free crash course, you can contact First District Health in Minot at 837-5171. Those who attend Thursday's class will receive free patches to help you kick the habit.
