Dickinson Residents Celebrate New Year

Posted: Updated:

More people in Dickinson means more New Year's celebrations.

Fire prevention specialists with the Dickinson Fire Department say even though fireworks are legal this New Year's, residents can't just set them off anywhere.

It's still illegal to set off fireworks within Dickinson city limits. And if you decide to set them off outside the city, they remind you not to go on other people's property. The snow should prevent any risks with dry grass and fireworks, but it could cause other safety concerns this year.

"We want to remind our citizens that if there are fire hydrants around your area, with the snow being moved sometimes they get covered up or if we have a lot of snow. We want to keep the fire hydrants free and clear so we ask if you could help us with that," says fire prevention specialist Deb Barros.

Barros also says it's important to shovel sidewalks and walkways in case you need to get out of your house quickly during a fire emergency.

But there are plenty of safe ways to have some fun on New Year's Eve in Dickinson, including the annual Parks and Rec free public skate event.

It started back in the nineties, but this year's event is a special one. It's the last one that the Parks and Recreation Department will hold in the original ice rink. By next New Year's Eve, Dickinson will have a bigger facility with another rink and a few more additions.

"The other facility will seat approximately 300, so this will still be the main arena but it gives us a lot more opportunities to host different jamborees, tournaments, a lot more opportunities for us to do public skates throughout the year without it being canceled due to games," says recreational facilities manager Ryan Nelson.

The Parks and Rec New Year's party is tomorrow from 1 p.m.- 4 p.m. It's free to get in, but you do have to pay to rent skates.

There will be door prizes, including iPods and a TV.
