Man Helps Cancer Patients With Four Wheels

Posted: Updated:

A chauffeur's life isn't so bad. You might get to drive around with celebrities. The pay might be pretty good. On the other hand, what if you simply volunteer to drive people around because they have no other means of transportation? Then you might be considered a hero.

Duane Aman is on a mission. This unassuming retiree spends time on the road as an angel of mercy. He gives patients rides to the Bismarck Cancer Center if they have no other transportation. They're generally people who've come from a long distance for extended treatment.

"It's all on my own time, my own gas and everything, which I don't mind. It's a nice thing to do, I think. And I get rewarded sometimes, I get a little bit in return. But nothing to worry about or get excited about," says Aman.

"Good morning. How are you?"

Joan Soehren lives in Bowman and she's here for several weeks of radiation and chemotherapy. Duane picks her up every day. And he knows what she's going through. He's beat cancer and his wife is in remission.

"Yeah, he's just a great guy. Takes me wherever I need to go, waits for me, comes and gets me. He just, yeah," says Soehren.

And as soon as he drops Joan off, he heads out to give someone else a ride. Perhaps that's why the Cancer Center recently presented Duane with its My Hero Award at a special banquet.

If you'd like me to highlight someone who helps others just because it's a nice thing to do, let me know by phone, email or Facebook.
