Klothes for Kin

Posted: Updated:

As school let out for the holiday, Andrew Delzer had to take care of one more thing before going home.

"Because there is over 600 kids in need of clothing, and I thought I would help them," says Andrew.

Help them indeed. In a family meeting about how to give back, ten year old Andrew suggested a clothing collection drive. And he decided to call it Klothes for Kin, which is short for Kids in Need.

"When he came up with it, it kind of blew me away,." says his father, Jason. "But you know, he's a pretty detailed kid and came up with it himself, and I'm very proud of him. It's a good way to actually show that there's a lot of people out in our community that are in need."

And this isn't even all of it. He set up drop boxes at two schools, two churches, and Sylvan Learning Center. There were too many items to even count. But if he was looking for 600, he probably came close.

"I talked to my parents and I said I want to do it at my school," says Andrew. "So I talked to my principal, and she said it would be a go here."

He had it all done," added his principal at Centennial, Michele Svihovec. "He had a flyer that was going to go home with the students. He had how he wanted to do it, and so all I really had to do was print the flyer, hand it out, and he did all the other work. So, I was pretty impressed."

The family arrived at Carrie's Kids with three loaded vehicles. And as they brought bag after bag in, the enormity of the collection became apparent.

"There's a lot to unload. Look at all this stuff."

Carrie Grosz has been helping homeless and at risk children, teens, and young adults for seven years. She teaches them life skills and helps fill their needs, often with little advance warning.

"Some kids will only need like a shirt, some need a coat. But some actually need a whole wardrobe, you know, they didn't have anything," says Grosz. "So he made a huge dent here, and I think this will last us for a couple of months."

Proof that a fourth grader with a big vision can accomplish great things.
