North Dakota Flu Activity

Posted: Updated:

Now that Christmas has come and gone, some people may be setting their sights on New Year celebrations. But catching the flu is not a fun way to welcome in the new year.

Flu activity is on the rise across the state and doctors are urging North Dakotans to protect themselves by getting vaccinated.

H1N1 is a common strain affecting people throughout the state, especially among 20 to 40 year olds.  More than 400 North Dakotans die annually from complications of flu and pneumonia.  Even if you feel healthy, you could be spreading flu germs before you even know you have it.

"You spread the virus for a full day before you have any symptoms.  So, you're already spreading the virus to people that work with, that you live with, before you even know you're getting sick.  The more people that are vaccinated in a community, the less flu virus that's in that community.  You can stop it before it gets widespread," says Nurse Coordinator Danell Eklund.

First District Health Unit in Minot does take walk-ins for people looking to get their flu shots.  They are open 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
