Papa's Polar Patch Opens for Season

Papa's Pumpkin Patch is getting a winter makeover. And it doesn't come around every year. Normally a lot of snow means schools and businesses are closed. For Papa's Polar Patch, snow means another year of outdoor winter fun.

"A number of years ago, people asked me, they said you know, 'David, you should do Christmas trees like you do pumpkins,' or 'You should do poinsettias like you do pumpkins.' And so it caused the idea of well we could do some sort of a patch in the wintertime instead of a pumpkin patch," say owner David Pearce. 

And that idea became Papa's Polar Patch.

It opened Thursday for its short winter season.

"This is our sixth year, sixth Polar Patch. It's not the sixth year because we have not done six continuous years because we've not had snow every year," says Pearce.

But there's plenty of snow this year for kids and adults to have some outdoor fun.

"When we first took off, I was kind of scared and nervous. It was fun and snow got in my eyes a couple times," say Lexi Miller.

Papa's Polar Patch has tons of different activities, including a car hood sled. You guys ready to go?

"I'm looking to have some fun and then hopefully going on the horse ride, that looks fun too," says Logan Miller, Lexi's brother.

"We always come out here for the pumpkin patch and it's kind of a continuation of that for some winter time activities. A lot of people get cooped up in the winter and they like to get out in the fresh air," says parent David Siegfried.

"Papa" says the patch will close for the day if it gets too cold or windy.
He says he doesn't think the cold will keep people away.

"My guess is we're going to see close to 5,000 people here in the next 10 days," says Pearce.

The polar patch runs through January 5.

Papa's Polar Patch is open from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. everyday. It costs $5 to get in, and that includes two free ride tickets.
