Tech Talk: Google Chromecast

Posted: Updated:

It's been one of the best selling gifts this holiday. It's the most affordable product of its kind. And the Google Chromecast has been flying off shelves.

In a world where not all televisions are created equal, one company is trying to even the score.
The Google Chromecast allows users to stream online content directly to their TV. While it's not the only product on the market, it has its advantages.

"It's about the size of a USB thumb drive, which makes it considerably smaller than any other streaming device, the Apple TV, the Roku. Also, the price. It's $35, as opposed to $100, which is the case of the other ones. So, you have something that is very, very easy to manage because of the size, and very, very easy to manage for the price, as well," says Askia Humphrey, Best Buy.

For many stores, the consumer response has been overwhelming. And they've struggled to keep the Chromecasts in stock.

"They are not staying on the shelves," says Humphrey. "When we first got them in, we'd get a shipment of maybe 15, which was a little frustrating, because they'd sell out in literally maybe 10 minutes. It's slowed down a bit, but even still, they're easily the most popular things we have in the store."

The Wi-Fi enabled device plugs into the HDMI port on your TV. It's a simple as downloading an app. And it easily pairs with computers, smart phones or tablets.

"It works with Apple the same as it works with a PC or anything like that. You have to download the Google Chrome browser. And after that, you're ready to go," he says.

The Google Chromecast streams content from Netflix, YouTube, Hulu and other providers.
There are some limitations. Humphrey says it doesn't stream anything and everything to your TV. But Google plans to release updates to make it more comparable to the competition.

Perhaps the best part of the Google Chromecast is its portability. You can use it anywhere you have a Wi-Fi connection and a TV. Just plug it in and press play.
