Christmas came early for one student. The Bismarck Sylvan Learning Center gave local student Taylor Johnson a national scholarship for all the hard work she's put in over the years. Johnson is one of 10 winners across the U.S.
For the last three years Taylor Johnson has been going to Sylvan to improve her reading skills. Her mother and teachers say she gets better with every session.
The teachers agreed Johnson deserved a special reward.
"I told Nicole, 'I get to say the exact same thing every single time to you. She always tries hard, she, the teachers absolutely love working with her. And with that we have this opportunity to present this award to you,' " says Tamara Wagner, Sylvan Learning Center.
Sylvan Corporate started a scholarship fund to honor an employee, Leah Maurer, who died suddenly. Many Sylvan branches knew her well, and say the scholarship honors her passion and belief in students to achieve.
"Oh my goodness. I cried. It was an honor, and I was so excited. I just hope that she takes this and continues to grow herself and forever, you know, she can do whatever she wants to do in life," says Taylor's mother Kari Weigel.
"I was really scared because whenever I get called to a place, or I just, I always think I'm in trouble. Even when I know I'm not. So, when they told me, I couldn't stop smiling. Like I had to go get my new glasses and the whole way there and on the way back home, I had a big smile on my face. I could not wipe it off," says Johnson.
This is the first year for the scholarship fund, so there is a possibility Johnson could win again. Either way she says she's happy for the award, but Sylvan has already given her so much.
"I know I can do whatever I want now. I don't have to worry about, I can't do this. I know I can do it all the time now," says Johnson.
Johnson's mom says she appreciates all that her daughter has gained though Sylvan.
Johnson's scholarship will pay for her sessions at Sylvan. The teachers say giving the scholarship to her a few weeks before Christmas, allowed her mother to focus on other expenses during the holiday season.
