Returning Gifts Become Hassle Free

Posted: Updated:

So, Santa has delivered his gifts, but what if the sweater was a bit too snug? The laptop not exactly what you needed and you already have five pairs of reindeer socks. Return policies can get confusing, but these tips can help you navigate the long lines at customer service counters and have a hassle free return.

No one enjoys returning gifts, and return policies often include a great deal of fine print.

"Gone are the days of the simple return policy there used to be a time where you could go to Target and say on Target has a 90 day policy. So and SOS store's a 30 say policy, so and SOS a 60 day policy," says Edgar Dworsky, founder of ConsumerWorld.com

Dworsky says constant changes to policies can make it difficult for a consumer to know what and when they have to return their gifts.

"Retailers for the past several years have been what I call slicing and dicing their return policies setting complicated rules for different categories of goods."

This year's World Consumer survey found several changes in major retailers return policy. Target's policy is 90 days for most items except for electronics which must be returned within 30 days after December 26. For online purchases Target.com will pay for return shipping with their label. And red card holders get 30 extra return days.

Walmart's similar policy is categorized by what you purchased. With 15 days for electronics and 30 for all other purchases. Last March Best Buy shortened their return period from 30 to 15 days, but through their Holiday Extension, purchases made between November 3 and December 31 can be returned through January 15.

And regardless to any changes made by major retailers to their return policy, you always have to remember to bring your receipt.

"If you have your receipt and a friendly manner hopefully you'll get an even exchange, merchandise credit and don't expect to get money back even with a gift receipt."

Dworsky also recommends hitting the stores late in the evening or right when they open to minimize your wait time.

Dworsky recommends shoppers head back to the stores for after Christmas sales, and to start the return period a few days after Christmas day.
