Social Media Helps Contest Winner

Posted: Updated:

The power of social media grow with every new tweet and Facebook user. And one local marketing firm used social media to help make a big decision.

KK BOLD has done contests in the past, but this one was a little bit different. For the first time, the marketing firm turned to the public for nominations and votes for their "STEP UP" contest.

The contest was open to non profits organizations in Bismarck and Minot, and the winner receives up to $15,000 in creative services from the firm.

"We received more than 30 nominations and from that we chose six finalists," says KK BOLD's PR director Debra Anderson.

KK Bold accepted nominations for about a month ending December first. After that they narrowed it down to 6 agencies that matched specific criteria.

"We were looking for agencies that serve either the Bismarck or Minot area and those who have a statewide mission, we ended up with the 6 finalists who has some of each," says Anderson.

The six finalists received more than 10,000 votes on KK Bold's Facebook page and the winner was announced last Friday. Designer Genes of North Dakota took the prize,a non profit that supports individuals who have down syndrome and their families. Roxane Romanick, Designer Gene's board president says she was anxious on Friday because of the neck and neck race.

"We didn't really have a plan, it just kind of all came together, and then of course Friday was really nerve wracking," says Romanick.

Romanick says that the word of Designer Genes spread all across the country and even to Europe and Australia, and this all happened through Facebook,

"It just got really crazy and I keep hearing stories about we've had people share it that were in Australia people that were in England its just been everywhere," she says.

Romanick says she was shocked to see the support from the community, and she has big plans for the help Designer Genes will receive from KK BOLD. She says she wants to improve display materials, and make the website more informational and supportive for individuals with down syndrome and their families.
