United Blood Service Asks for Holiday Help

Posted: Updated:

This time of the year is not only a time for shopping and parties, it's also a big push for blood donations.

The holidays are always a tough time. I mean, people are out traveling, visiting family members. There's just, there's a lot more going on, people are busier," says Travis Dressler, a recruitment representative for United Blood Services. "The thought of donating blood isn't in the forefront of people's minds."

Donating blood is one of the best ways that you can give back this time of year. It's free, easy, and it fills a big need in the community.

"Those hospitals that we service in the whole state on average use 500 units of blood on a daily basis," Dressler says. "So that's, that's what we have to recoup every single day."

United Blood Service centers across North Dakota rely on blood donations from more than one source.

"It all comes through donors coming in to our centers and donating, and also donating on our mobile blood drives as well," Dressler says.

The success of this season's blood donations will depend on people like Martin Holbrook, who take time out of their day to give back.

"Maybe it gives it a little more christmas spirit to, to be able to help someone out that, that may need blood during this time of year," Holbrook says.

Often times, donors like Holbrook even try to keep a schedule of their donations.

"I hadn't donated in quite a long time and, there was a blood drive that we did a couple of months ago, or this summer, and we went in and did it, and I guess I got right back on my eight-week schedule," Holbrook says. "So it's, I like to help out, and people need blood and I've got lots of it."

And even when the holidays have come and gone, the need for blood will still be in the community.

United Blood Services will be holding a blood drive this Friday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Arrowhead Shopping Center right in front of Marketplace Foods.

If you want to participate all you need to bring is a photo ID, a list of any meds you take, and be sure to eat before you arrive.
