Cold Takes a Toll on Those Using Public Transportation

Posted: Updated:

We've told you about the problems drivers face in the cold weather, but what about people who don't own a vehicle?

When passengers are on the CAT bus, they don't feel the cold.

But it's the waiting outside that's the real problem.

"It can be really severely bad. Sometimes, even waiting for a few minutes I get severely cold," says CAT bus rider David Steward.

Drivers say not everyone is dressed for the weather.

"When the school kids ride, they don't bundle up. But most of the people that get on the bus, they get in with red faces and they bundle up pretty good," says bus driver Dale Lein.

Most riders say they try to wear layers, or find a warm place to wait.

"If I can find a place to go and sit, or have a cup of coffee or something, I usually go inside a building," says Steward.

Drivers say when temps dip to 20 below, the stops tend to stay empty. That's because most riders would rather stay inside than wait for the bus in winter weather.

"You just gotta take your time when the roads are icy or if it's a blizzard or something. Sometimes we run a little late, but we do the best we can," says Lein.

Lein says the CAT buses are normally right on schedule. Passengers should check when the next bus is coming before they go outside and wait.

The CAT buses will stop running an hour early tomorrow on Christmas Eve. They will not run at all on Christmas Day.
