Open Your Heart Feeds County

Posted: Updated:

Over 300 families in need, in Burleigh County will be getting a hot meal for the holidays, all thanks to donations and volunteers from the community.

It may look like chaos, but these volunteers know exactly what needs to be done to get all the food where it needs to be.

"When all of the schools and the different organizations have donated, we take out say the canned peas and put it in a category. Eventually then that will go over to the other side where the purchased items are put and they'll be combined,"says volunteer Diane Haan.

Haan has been volunteering with the Open Your Heart organization for about 30 years and says knowing she is helping others is what keeps her coming back.

"I just keep wanting to remember that any one of us could be in this same position. So to be able to help is awesome," says Haan.

And she's not the only veteran volunteer. Austin Fisher has been helping out since he was six years old, before he could even read the signs.

"I usually do the ramen noodles and I just go around and pick up ramen noodles and take stuff that people don't know where it goes,"says Austin Fisher.

Once sorted, the food will be divided up for each of the 317 families who will be getting a helping hand.

"The whole idea behind open your heart when they announced in 1930 was to have was to have everybody do a little bit so someone didn't have to do it all. So, if everybody does a little bit it's a great big result," says Bob Wefald.

And he says every year they have volunteers who come because they benefited from the program in the past and now want to give back to those who need it most.

If you would like to help out you can show up at the civic center tonight at 6:30 to help fill boxes, or tomorrow at 7 a.m. to deliver the food boxes to the families.
