Cathedral Students Help African Mission

Posted: Updated:

Faulty zippers are a hassle, for some it can ruin an entire school day. Kisi Missionaries in Kenya reached out to Bismarck Cathedral School for help to purchase new zippers for school uniforms.

Mrs. H's sixth grade students have been working for weeks, learning the basics of how to build, market and run a business. They even had a parent come in and give real world experiences.

"Perseverance, hard work, and just achieving a goal. They've done that. The other side of that goal was giving something back to society by giving meaning to this mission. It's positivity across the board," says Jim Braun, parent.

Each student had their own competing business booth. But the common goal was raising money for their peers in Africa.

"Giving students the picture. The big picture. That it's not all about them, that it's about other people. and being able to provide a service to somebody else," says Nancy Hopfauf, Cathedral teacher.

"It should make someone feel better to give more to another person because they probably don't have as much things as we do. So it's good to give those people zippers, because we have zippers. They don't go to school if they don't have zippers," says Elizabeth Peyerl, student.

"Sharing is very good and the people, give it to the people who need it. Who could use it, put it to good use, who don't have very much," says Andrea Frank, student.

By 12:30 nearly every student's booth was sold out. Mrs. H said she's proud of the students and estimates the class raised more than $400.

Cathedral sixth graders aren't the only ones raising money for international students, the school's second graders raised $200 for sewing kits to also send to Africa.
