Tech Talk: Ultra High-Definition TVs

Posted: Updated:

It's the latest technology to hit the home entertainment industry. Ultra high definition televisions, and they're more affordable that ever before. The next generation of home entertainment is here. Ultra high definition televisions hit the market earlier this year.

"They're sharper, [have] better colors and a much better picture than before," says Chris Quick, Pacific Sound.

The TVs offer four times the resolution of bluray technology. And they provide more than a sharper image.

"If you think about a box of crayons, if a standard TV has 64 crayons worth of color that you can make a picture with, these new TVs have a box of 256 or higher. You've got a wider color gamut, so you can have more precise, richer colors. Instead of red, you have ruby red. You have emerald green," says Quick.

The smart TVs also allow viewers to stream video easier than ever before, offering instant access to Netflix, HuluPlus and Amazon Prime. And Netflix will offer ultra high definition content as early as February.

But don't throw out your old DVDs just yet.

"The TVs have a scaler built into them that will take content that is not in Ultra high definition and convert it to look very close to ultra high definition. Essentially, any source that you feed these new TVs will look the best that it possibly can," he says.

Quick says nearly every movie filmed in the last four years has been shot in ultra high definition. And now, you can watch it in the comfort of your own home.

The new TVs also have several built-in smart features, including web browsers and Skype. Earlier this year, the TVs sold for about $7,000. Right now, the televisions run for about $3,000.
