DSU Art Gallery Holds Student Art Show

Posted: Updated:

Art speaks to different people in different ways. The same can be said for artists. The Dickinson State University student art show showcases work that could end up as a Christmas gift, a charitable donation, or an award-winning project.

For Dickinson State student David Garig, drawing isn't just a hobby.

"I've literally been drawing for longer than most of my classmates have been alive," says Garig.

After changing majors, the 26-year-old finally found his home in the DSU art department.

"The teachers, the faculty, in the art department are really great. They're the kind of teachers that aren't going to just let you idle by. They want to push you, and I think that's one of the greatest things about our art program here," says Garig.

And right now, the art program is capping 2013 with its annual student art show. Students of all ages and skill levels enter for a chance to show off their skills.

"We demand quite a bit of work from our students. They meet a minimum of six hours a week in class and then outside of class time can be at least that much or more," says DSU art professor Greg Walter.

Students are even putting some of their work up for sale.

"It's an opportunity for us to show off our talent, show how we've been doing in our classes and really just show what we do," says Garig.

But while this student work is for show or for sale, some students did work for charity.

"My students and my advanced students raised $4,500," says DSU ceramics professor Robin Reynolds.

DSU ceramics students made bowls last month for Dickinson's empty bowls fundraiser.

"It's gratifying and it helps them understand community better, and that the arts are so integrated into the community," says Reynolds.

The DSU art show ends on Friday. The Art Gallery is free and open to the public from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. It's in Klinefelter Hall on Dickinson State's campus.
