Precipitation Creates More Fishing Waters

Posted: Updated:

This may be a work day, but those who enjoy ice fishing might have looked for an excuse to be on the lake. The Game and Fish Department says there are plenty of fish to catch.

There are more than 400 places to fish, and many are packed to the gills. And because of several years of high precipitation, some lakes are higher than they've ever been. And some that disappeared a few years ago are now back.

"So, that's a really good opportunity, because they're so productive, our wetlands, that we can stock fish into them and see them grow quickly. And that's one of the reasons why we have so many record lakes today, because we took a really aggressive approach and started stocking fish. And now, it's four to five growing seasons later, and those fish are catchable and people are able to take advantage of them," says Scott Gangl, NDGF Fisheries Management Section Leader.

Game and Fish introduced fish into several areas in the south central portion of the state in 2009.  Gangl says those fish have now grown to keeper size.
