Commission Looks Into Home Rule Charter and Sales Tax

Posted: Updated:

Tonight the Burleigh County Commission makes the final decision on whether to implement a home rule charter, and an extra sales tax to help fund a new detention center.

The tax will help pay for the new $50 million jail between Burleigh and Morton County Jail.

"This is a very limited home rule charter," says Kevin Glatt, Burleigh County Auditor.  "The specific power it allows, and the only power it allows is the power to levy a half cent sales tax for the purpose of funding a new detention center."

Glatt says when the bonds are paid off for the jail the sales tax and home rule charter will terminate.
