NDGF Reminds Fishermen to be Safe on the Ice

Posted: Updated:

Lakes are freezing over, which is great news for those who love to go ice fishing. But the Game and Fish Department says no ice is safe ice.

Ice should be four to six inches thick before you walk on it, and twelve to fifteen inches before driving on it. And if you drive, pay attention to your surroundings.

"You always have to use caution and try to avoid areas like pressure ridges, or if you know where there are springs. A lot of times, those will be hidden, because there will be a thin skim of ice over what could be pretty deep water wherever there might be a spring. So, you always have to be somewhat cautious and proceed with that kind of caution," says Scott Gangl, NDGF Fisheries Management Section Leader.

Gangl says it's good to carry a set of ice picks, in case you break through the ice.
