Minot Woman Turns 100

Posted: Updated:
Dagney Holte is a life-long North Dakotan.  She was born in the small town of Larson on December 14, 1913.  But, life was a little different back then.

"The only way we got around was by horse and buggy," says Dagney. "I think my dad was one of the first to buy a car and it was a Nash."

As Holte grew up on a grain farm with three brothers and two sisters, she quickly learned the value of hard work.

"Oh, I worked hard," says Dagney. "A farm is a place where you really work.  Stock, grain, all bundles."

And, some things just never change.  Even at 100, Holte still keeps very busy.

"Get up in the morning, eat my breakfast, and for entertainment, I do read a lot and then visit with some of my neighbors," says Dagney.

"She is kind of reluctant to get older and she's never been an old women ever in her life," says Granddaughter, Dawn Koppelsloen. "And, she doesn't even as she got older, she doesn't accept it, you know, she is very active."

Each day, Holte rides her exercise bike for about 20 minutes.

"Well, I think it helps keep me going," says Dagney.

When asked about turning 100, Dagney says it doesn't feel like it's been that long.

"It makes me feel special," says Dagney. "When I think of it a 100 years it's really something.  But, I don't feel it.  I still feel the same as I did when I was 50."

But, the last 100 years haven't always been easy.  From the death of her siblings to grandson, she experienced a lot in her lifetime.

"She's had so much loss in her life and yet, she's still strong and faces life with a smile and it's such an inspiration," says Dawn. "She's such an inspiration."

"Where do you kind of go from here?  Do you have any big plans for the next year ahead of you?  I don't think that far ahead," says Dagney.

As Holte celebrates another year of life with friends and family, she continues to take it one day at a time.

Throughout the years, Dagney's family has been saving the front page of the Washington Post. And, today, they presented the birthday girl with a special keepsake book, so she can take a step back into time and remember what life has been like the past 100 years.
