Mandan Plans to Replace Closing Grocery Store

Posted: Updated:

When Mandan's Central Market closed unexpectedly a few weeks ago, residents were upset.
But city leaders say they want them to know they're trying to fill the empty building as soon as possible.

The parking lot outside Mandan's former Central Market is empty now. But city officials they say are hoping it won't stay that way for long.

"I would like to see another grocery store come back to our community. I know it was a little community gathering place for our elderly citizens, they'd walk there, they'd have coffee with each other," says Mayor Arlyn Van Beek.

Van Beek says the city is working with the Bismarck/Mandan Development Association to try and bring in a new store.

"We have the closing of a business like Central Market that's been such an integral part of downtown Mandan. There's no denying the impact it has on the community," says Brian Ritter, the Bismarck-Mandan Development Association .

And even though they can't control the sale itself, they are trying to recruit businesses.

"Right now, we're just putting the word out there, letting people know this is going to be available," says Van Beek.

Community members say they want another supermarket, but there's a chance the building will house something else.

"It does present an opportunity for the community. There are not many buildings that size and that location, especially in a market like Mandan and Bismarck right now when things are so good," says Ritter.

But Van Beek says as he thinks the community needs a grocery store in that spot.

"We have a growing community that I feel strongly that it can support another grocery store in that location, and with our new Super Wal-Mart and Dan's South, it's in a great location," says Van Beek.

There's no set timeline for when a new business will move into that building.

The Bismarck Mandan Development Association says the groups are still trying to figure out what kind of business, besides a grocery store, could work in that location.
